Chris Martine
David Burpee Chair in Plant Genetics & Research
Director of the Manning Herbarium
I am a biodiversity scientist with a particular focus on plants, especially the ecology and evolution of plant reproduction. Much of my work has been in the plant family Solanaceae, including more than a decade looking into the unusual breeding systems of the genus Solanum in northern Australia through a combination of field studies and molecular phylogenetics. My broad interests in natural history have also kept me rooted in my home region, the northeastern US, where I have engaged in field-based studies with students and colleagues. The Martine Lab lived at SUNY Plattsburgh from July 2026 to June 2012 — and has been at Bucknell since July of 2012. -

Devani Jolman
Burpee Postdoc, begins June 2026
Growing up on the shores of Lake Michigan, I developed a deep sense of awe and wonder for natural spaces. After receiving a BS in Biology from Calvin College, I became a Park Interpreter for Vermont State Parks, teaching programs in the summer and skiing in the winter. I then pursued a PhD in Ecological Sciences at Old Dominion University, where I investigated natural plant hybridization with wild highbush blueberries. As a plant ecologist, I am interested in documenting biodiversity and understanding its drivers through field-based research.

BS ‘25, MS ‘27
Plants have always existed in my life as teachers, whose diverse forms and beauty nourished a deep curiosity for the natural world. A non-traditional student, my interest in plants and ecology motivated me to get my Associate's from Montgomery County Community College, followed by my Bachelor’s at Bucknell, where I double-majoring in Biology and Environmental Science. As a Master’s student, I’m working on a fine-grain morphological assessment of Penstemon canescens. I next aspire to pursue a PhD in botany!

Kayleigh Long

My name is Kayleigh Long and I am a senior from Charlottesville, Virginia, studying biology and environmental science. I have been a member of the lab since my freshman year and have worked on a range of botanical projects, including an assessment of the invasive potential of a cultivated species and population genomics. Currently, I am working on a new Australian Solanum species project. After graduating from Bucknell this spring, I will be attending veterinary school.

I am a Biochemistry/Cell Biology and Film & Media Studies major from Brentwood, Maryland. Outside of academics, I spend much of my time writing, playing with my cats, or spending time with friends. In the lab, I have developed an interest in extrafloral nectaries in a newly studied Solanum species, and I hope to explore how environmental factors influence nectar secretion.

I am a Biology major from Massachusetts. In my free time, I enjoy studying with friends and watching scary movies! I am interested in working on collecting new data about various plant species in the lab. My plan for the future is to excel in my classes, make new connections, and attend medical school.

I am from Alexandria, Virginia, and I am currently a Biology major with a Visual Arts minor. Outside of the lab, I play on the women's club volleyball team, watercolor, and love searching for antiques. I have not currently joined any projects; however, I have developed an interest in the Solanum species and how they utilize their fruits. In the future, I hope to attend dental school and further my studies in Orthodontics.
